Selecting The Ideal Garage Size
Renovating or building your garage is the ideal time to create the space you’ve always wanted. With all the different garage door sizes on the market, it can be difficult to determine what you need for your home, but don’t worry!
This guide will tell you everything you need to know about garage door sizes so that you can make the best decision.
Single-Car Garage Doors
If you have only one small car and do not need extra space in your garage, a single-car garage door will be a perfect choice. The size of these doors is 8 to 9 feet wide and 7 to 8 feet high.
Two Single Doors Or One Double Door
This style will meet your needs if you don’t like how a double-car door looks but still want enough room for two cars to park. This style places two single-car garage doors side-by-side. Apart from appearances, it can also be great if you only need access to one car at a time.
The cost of two single doors tends to be the same as one double-car door, so choosing between the two is a matter of your personal preferences. Besides a different aesthetic, two single doors provide a practical solution. When a double-car garage door won’t open, your vehicles will be stuck inside, which can be very frustrating if you need to go somewhere. Two single doors eliminate this problem — if one door is stuck shut, you’ll still have access to the car behind the other door.
Single double door size is normally 16 feet wide and 7 to 8 feet high.
Other Factors to Consider
When you’re choosing a door size, you should also use the following factors to help guide your decision-making:
- Headroom: Headroom is the height between the top of the garage door and the ceiling. This space must be a certain height to fit the garage door tracks, opener, springs and the door itself. It needs to be between 10 and 12 inches depending on whether you use torsion or extension springs.
- Depth room: The depth of your garage must be enough to allow the entire garage door to fit in that space when the door is up. This space should measure the height of the door plus 18 inches.
- Taller vehicles: If you want to store your heavy-duty truck or recreational vehicle in your garage, you may need to make your garage door size as high as 12 feet. Accessories such as a snowplow on the grill or extended side mirrors may mean that you should increase the width to 10 feet for a comfortable fit.
- Extra vehicles: If your garage is big enough, having multiple garage doors is an easy solution to allow all of your cars in the garage. Typical setups have one double-car door and one single-car door or a single-car door for each vehicle.
